What Is Hytale?

Hytale in two paragraphs

Hytale is a voxel sandbox game from Hypixel Studios, the team that ran the Hypixel Minecraft server. You play in a procedurally generated world called Orbis. You explore it, gather materials, craft gear, farm, build a base, and fight the creatures and factions that live there. If you have played Minecraft, that loop will feel familiar. The differences show up in the detail: combat is stamina-gated with guarding, rolling and per-weapon signature moves, blocks come in slabs, stairs, beams, pillars and sloping roof pieces rather than mostly cubes, and the world is split into distinct zones that each generate by their own rules and hold their own creatures, blocks and weather.

The other half of Hytale is the creation side, and it is the half the studio has invested most heavily in. Creative Mode ships with a real toolset (selection and paste tools, a prefab editor, shape and scripted brushes, a machinima camera), and modding is built into the architecture rather than bolted on. Every Hytale world, including your single-player one, is a server. Mods are installed on that server, not on your client, so joining a heavily modded world requires no downloads and no separate launcher profile. That one decision changes how the game's multiplayer works more than any feature on the box.

Is Hytale out? Yes, since 13 January 2026

Hytale launched in Early Access on 13 January 2026 for Windows, macOS and Linux. You can buy it and play it today. The base edition is a one-time $19.99, sold through hytale.com and its own launcher rather than Steam.

This is worth stating plainly because most Hytale writing online, including two older posts on this site, was published before launch and still reads as if release is ahead. It is not. What is still ahead is content. As of 28 July 2026 the live build is Update 5 (26 May 2026) plus hotfixes, Adventure Mode has not shipped, and Chapter 1, the first handcrafted dungeon and boss fight, was estimated on 16 July 2026 as "within the next 2-3 months" with no date announced.

The road to that launch is short enough to fit in a table, and it explains why so much of the internet is out of date.

16 July 2026Chapter 1 and the rest of the roadmap previewed in the largest blog post the game has had.

How finished it actually is

Hypixel has been unusually direct about the state of the game, and quoting them is fairer than paraphrasing. The launch post called the build "unpolished and incomplete, but within those rough edges lies the foundation for something extraordinary", and explained why: after buying the game back, the team had eight weeks to work with a four-year-old build, merge hundreds of branches, and repair camera, movement, combat, crafting, building, audio and rendering before shipping it.

Six months later, previewing Chapter 1 on 16 July 2026, Simon Collins-Laflamme wrote:

To be transparent, there aren't many reasons to come back and play Hytale right now. We have a lot of work to do to realize the game's potential.

So should you buy it now?

Take that quote at face value. Hytale is a $19.99 one-time purchase with a public roadmap, an active update cadence, and a modding scene that had produced more than 5,000 mods with over 20 million CurseForge downloads by March 2026. It is also a game whose owner says there is not much reason to log in this particular week if you have already seen what is there.

If you want a finished adventure game, wait for Chapter 1. If you want to build things, run a server, or make mods, the tools are already better than the content, and that has been true since launch.

For the pre-launch history in full, including the Riot years and the edition tiers, our older what you need to know before release primer covers it. Note that it was written in the future tense before 13 January 2026, so treat its release and platform claims as historical.

The gameplay loop: Exploration, Creative, and the mode that has not shipped

Hytale is not one experience. The studio splits it into modes, two of which you can play now and two of which are still being built. Knowing which is which saves you a lot of confusion when you read older previews that describe a story-driven RPG.

ModeStatusWhat it is
ExplorationPlayable since launchThe survival-style loop: infinite procedural world, biomes, structures, creatures, monsters, building, farming, crafting and multiplayer.
CreativePlayable since launchUnlimited resources, tunable flight, world editing, block rotation and previews, connected block textures, and entity tools.
AdventureNot shippedDescribed by Hypixel as rich story and narrative elements, deeper progression, dungeons with boss fights and more.
MinigamesNot shippedA separate collection of party micro-games, 14 of them as of July 2026, each lasting 60 to 120 seconds.

What Exploration Mode contains today

This is the mode most people mean when they say they are playing Hytale. It is a survival loop with a few named systems layered on top, most of which arrived after launch:

  • The Forgotten Temple: where you uncover the first pieces of the Cursebreaker story arc. It is being turned into the hub for progression through the Early Access chapters.
  • The Ancient Gateway: a craftable, placeable device that opens unstable, temporary worlds called Fragments of Orbis.
  • Memories and the Heart of Orbis: you collect memories from creatures and factions and return them to the Heart of Orbis for permanent, world-wide rewards and upgrades. This is the closest thing Hytale has to a long-term progression track.
  • Movement and quality of life: mantling (climbing and vaulting), expandable inventories, and upgradable workbenches that pull materials from nearby storage.
  • Farming into cooking and alchemy: crops feed into food and potions rather than sitting as a decorative system.
  • Animal taming, added in Update 3.
  • Social features: proximity voice chat arrived in Update 4, and Update 5 added a social sidebar with friend management and Discord integration. Both were listed as missing at launch.

Chapters: how the rest of the game arrives

Hypixel does not ship Adventure Mode as one release. Content arrives in "chapters", defined in the Update 3 patch notes as larger content drops that unfold the Cursebreaker arc inside Exploration Mode, chapter by chapter, until the final chapter puts Orbis within reach and the game leaves Early Access.

Chapter 1 was previewed on 16 July 2026 and is the first real test of that model. It adds the first handcrafted dungeon, the first multi-phase boss fight, and the goblin faction, including hostile goblins with an elite called the Feastmaster that calls in reinforcements mid-fight, charges, and wrecks its own surroundings, plus friendly goblins including one that runs a shop.

It also brings the Goblin Breach, a world event that opens a temporary portal into an unstable fragment of Orbis. The fragment regenerates every time you enter, and a growing Void presence eventually pushes you out. Goblin gadgets come with it: rocket boots, a mechanical hookshot, a glider, a mining drill and a spyglass, alongside boats and carryable objects such as chests and explosive barrels.

What happens to the game and to Hypixel once the chapters run out is a separate question, and one we covered in Hytale after Early Access.

The published roadmap

These are the studio estimates given on 16 July 2026, reproduced as published. None of them is a committed date, and Hypixel has said it will announce a precise date for Chapter 1 closer to release. As of 28 July 2026 Update 6 exists only on the opt-in pre-release channel.

Combat and progression

Combat is the clearest place Hytale separates itself from its obvious comparison. It is not a click-to-swing system with a cooldown. Stamina governs guarding, sprinting and rolling, weapons have combo strings and a signature ability bound to its own on-screen input, and shields block frontal attacks only for as long as your stamina holds.

Weapon families named in 2026 patch notes are the sword, dagger, mace, shortbow, crossbow and shield, plus magic items such as the Necromancy Grimoire and deployable turrets. The studio has described how the melee families are meant to feel distinct rather than differing only in speed and damage numbers:

Weapon familyHow the studio describes it
One-handed swordA three-hit combo striking right, left, then an overhead chop. The charged attack is a lunge with a short dash and knockback. The signature is a spin followed by another powerful lunge that damages an area.
MaceSlow, expensive in stamina, high damage. Steady right-left swings with a high-knockback hilt bash on the alternate attack, and a leaping slam as the signature.
DaggersHit-and-run attacks with a large bonus to mobility.
BattleaxesBuild up damage boosts by landing successive hits.
ShieldsBlock frontal attacks for as long as the wielder has stamina.

Stamina is the system everything hangs off

If you take one mechanical fact away from this section, make it this one. Patch notes across 2026 have spent most of their combat lines tuning stamina behaviour, which tells you where the design weight sits:

  • Guarding, sprinting and rolling all draw on stamina. Sprinting ends the instant stamina empties.
  • Sliding no longer costs stamina, and stamina begins refilling half a second earlier after you guard with a weapon or shield.
  • Rolling is a real dodge, and rolling on landing reduces fall damage.
  • Arrows can no longer be used to ineffectively guard against incoming attacks.
  • Stamina potions come in five strengths, from Lesser to Large, which makes stamina a consumable resource you plan around rather than a passive bar.
  • Aerial combo attacks exist and carry their own speed boost.

Progression, and what is coming to replace the gaps

Hytale has no conventional experience bar or skill tree today. Progression runs through gear, through upgradable workbenches and expandable inventories, and through the Memories system feeding the Heart of Orbis for permanent world-wide upgrades. Lore arrives by what the studio calls archaeology: hints left in structures and the objects found inside them. Hypixel has said outright that there has never been a version of the game with anything close to a narrative implemented.

Chapter 1 adds the rune ability system on top of that. You equip runes that grant active combat abilities: an ability rune decides which ability you get, and modifier runes change what it does. Four layers are planned around it: modifier runes, elemental reactions (soak an enemy with water, then shock them), co-op combos (a fireball into a friend's tornado makes a flaming tornado), and environment interactions (rain soaks enemies, ice abilities freeze water blocks, a fireball into a poison barrel makes a toxic cloud). The launch scale is roughly six ability runes and a similar number of modifiers. Runeforging comes later.

For the specific weapons people chase and where they sit in the gear ladder, see our list of the best weapons in Hytale. This post deliberately stays at the level of families and systems.

Enemy and boss AI

The AI approach is unusual enough to be worth knowing about, because it is what will make or break the boss fights arriving in the chapters. Hytale NPCs do not use behaviour trees. They run ordered instruction lists built from more than 150 element types, authored entirely in JSON, which the studio says requires no programming knowledge. That is the same pipeline modders get.

On top of that sits the Combat Action Evaluator, which gives every attack a set of conditions describing the best moment to use it: when HP is low, when the enemy is close, when a player is trying to sneak around the back. The Skeleton Praetorian is the studio's worked example, choosing between blocking, summoning at low health, and charging.

Multi-phase fights come from the Encounter Manager, announced in July 2026 and already on the pre-release channel. It coordinates phases, wave spawns and arena changes, and encounters are authored as content rather than engine code, which means server owners and modders can build them too.

Building and the block system

Hytale looks like a blocky game and is built like one, but the numbers underneath differ from what Minecraft players expect, and those numbers are why builds look denser.

  • Chunks are 32 x 32 blocks, double Minecraft in each horizontal dimension. The official server manual equates 12 chunks with 384 blocks, and the hardware post gives roughly 27 KB of save data per chunk.
  • Textures are 32 pixels per block unit for blocks and props, and 64 pixels per unit for characters, tools and weapons. Textures must be multiples of 32. The art director describes the result as a modern, stylized voxel game with retro pixel-art textures.
  • Blocks are not only cubes: slabs, stairs, beams, wall blocks, pillars, tiled and thatched sloping roof blocks, and attachable decoration such as ivy. Several building materials are crafted from the same base block.
  • The block tech does work for you: connected textures smooth transitions between block types, blocks can be plain cubes, model-driven or a hybrid, RGB tinting is supported, submersible blocks intersect fluids without breaking physics, and ambient vertex animation makes foliage react to nearby entities.
  • Prefabs are first-class: saved structures used both by builders and by world generation to place trees, houses and large landmarks.
  • Two engine changes are in flight: real transparency (stained glass, window blocks, transparent parts on NPCs) around Chapter 1, and cubic chunks, which replace full-height world columns with 3D chunks loaded around players and unlock effectively infinite world height and depth.

The Creative Mode toolset

Creative Mode is closer to a level editor than to Minecraft creative. It ships with a selection tool with a rotation gizmo, a paste tool, a prefab editor, shape and scripted brushes, a smooth tool, a machinima tool, a ruler and a laser pointer, plus flight you can tune for speed, hover versus directional control and inertia.

It has also received the bulk of post-launch work. Update 4 added the Revolve tool for pasting rotations of a selection around a centre point, reorganised the creative inventory into five pages, added over 500 blocks, and gave every fence and wall T-junction and four-way junction support. Update 5 added the Trigger Volume tool for scripted encounters without writing code, with more than 20 effects, along with Replace, Type Replace, Extrude, Draw and Fast Place modes, Free Place and No Physics placement, and Sculpt brush modes with a sixfold smoothing speed-up. The Update 6 pre-release adds a colour tool with gradient and shading modes and a point tool for named persistent waypoints.

Zones, factions and world generation

The world is a planet called Orbis, and Gaia is described as its Avatar. Orbis is divided into zones, and a zone is not a biome. Each zone is treated as its own tile in the patchwork that makes up the world, with its own generation rules, biomes, blocks, NPCs, creatures and weather. Within a zone, each biome is a smaller tile, described by the studio as a jigsaw within a zone puzzle.

Four zones are named in official 2026 patch notes. Older community guides and some of our own earlier posts use the name "Emerald Grove"; the current official name in patch notes is the Emerald Wilds.

ZoneCharacter
Emerald WildsPlains-focused starting territory, and home of the Kweebecs.
Whisperfrost FrontiersThe cold zone: taiga valleys, mountains, glaciers and winding rivers.
Howling SandsDesert, including an oasis biome.
Devastated LandsVolcanic surface, and the richest undergrounds for ore. Update 2 added more ores, especially there.

Who lives there

Factions are the reason zones feel different beyond their palette. Confirmed in official 2026 sources: the Kweebecs, tree-folk of the Emerald Wilds with Seedling and Sapling sub-types, the Trorks, the Scaraks, the Ferans, the goblins arriving with Chapter 1, and the Void, which functions as the corrupting force rather than a settled faction. Hypixel has said all factions, Kweebecs included, will be reworked in future chapters, so treat current behaviour as provisional.

At the point the studio took the game back it counted over 100 NPCs and thousands of items and blocks, with the caveat that many were not properly configured yet. That mismatch between asset count and finished systems is the honest summary of Hytale in 2026.

WorldGen V2

The current generator is being replaced. WorldGen V2 is a visual node editor, already usable by modders and used as a category in the studio's own modding contest. The stated goals are far more advanced procedural caves first, then procedural dungeons, coherent villages and cities, rivers and roads. Hypixel has doubled the size of the level design team working on it and is redesigning the world around it, with the complete restored world of Orbis positioned as the default spawn once it lands.

One detail matters for anyone planning to build content: the studio has committed to sharing every biome it uses in Orbis with the community.

Modding and creation tools

Hytale was designed around modding, and it made two structural choices that Minecraft never could without breaking compatibility.

The first is server-side first. Even in single-player you join a local server that exists only for you. The studio's stated goal is that you should be able to join any modded Hytale server without downloading external mods or juggling client packs.

The second follows from it: one community, one client. Hypixel does not intend to support client mods at all, specifically to avoid a fragmented ecosystem where every server needs its own modded client. If you have ever kept four launcher profiles to play on three friends' servers, that is the problem being designed out.

  • Server plugins: Java .jar files, described by the technical director as extremely powerful. Minigames, economies, commands, custom logic and new asset types all live here.
  • Data assets: JSON. Blocks, items, NPCs, world generation, drop tables and loot.
  • Art assets: sounds, models and textures, authored in Blockbench through an official free Hytale plugin that replaced the studio's in-house modelling tools.
  • Save files: worlds and prefabs, shared like any other asset.

Scripting, distribution and shared source

There is deliberately no text-based scripting language, and the studio has said it does not intend to add one. The long-term plan is visual scripting modelled on Unreal Engine Blueprints. In the meantime, JSON data assets and Java plugins cover the ground scripting normally would.

Mods are distributed through CurseForge, the official partner, and an in-game Mod Browser was previewed for Update 6 with a commitment that there will be no paid mods in it. Models and animations are made in Blockbench, where Hytale models use only cubes and quads: no edge loops, no triangles, no spheres.

Scale check: by March 2026 players had published more than 5,000 mods with over 20 million CurseForge downloads, and the studio ran a $100,000 modding contest across WorldGen V2, NPC and Experience categories that drew close to 400 approved entries.

In June 2026 the studio went further and published the full server source, network protocol and game assets to licence holders under the Hytale Shared Source programme, modelled on Epic's Unreal Engine source access. The server API reference is public at docs.hytale.com.

Hytale vs Minecraft: an honest comparison

The comparison is unavoidable, so here it is with numbers rather than adjectives. Every Hytale figure below comes from the studio's own documentation. What the table does not do is tell you which game is better: Minecraft has fifteen years of content, mods and worlds behind it, and Hytale has six months of Early Access.

Which of those differences you will actually feel

Three of them. The rest are trivia until you run a server.

Combat is the first. Stamina, guarding, rolling and signature abilities make fights something you can be good or bad at, which is not really true of vanilla Minecraft.

The second is the modding model. Joining a modded Hytale server means clicking it in the server browser. No pack download, no version matching, no launcher profile. That is a genuinely different experience of multiplayer, and it is the direct result of the server-side-only rule.

The third is view distance. Orbis is designed to be seen at 384 blocks, more than twice the 160 a Minecraft server loads by default, and holding that much world costs proportionally more memory. It is the single biggest thing to understand before you host one.

What you need to run it, and playing with others

Hytale runs on Windows 10 (build 1809) and Windows 11 on x64, on Linux x64 with kernel 6.15 (shipped as a Flatpak), and on Apple Silicon Macs running macOS Tahoe. That corrects a claim that circulated widely before release: launch was not Windows-only.

Single-player works offline once installed, with an internet connection needed for the download and periodic authentication. Controller support for Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch controllers, with tunable dead zones, arrived in Update 5.

We are not going to restate the hardware tiers here, because our Hytale minimum and recommended PC specs post covers them properly: three tiers, storage figures, per-view-distance bandwidth, and why CPU matters more than GPU in this engine.

Playing with friends

There are three routes, and they escalate in effort. You can play together in any mode, including Creative, since multiplayer support shipped for all modes at launch.

  1. Join a public server from the in-game server browser, live since Update 5. You can search by title or description, filter by tags, and see how many players have liked or favourited each one.
  2. Host from your own machine and forward UDP port 5520. Free, works, and stops the moment you shut the PC down.
  3. Rent a dedicated server so the world stays online, keeps a fixed address, and runs mods for everyone without anyone installing anything.

Running your own Hytale server

The official server manual is unusually specific, which makes sizing a Hytale server easier than sizing a Minecraft one. These are the numbers that matter:

RequirementDetail
RuntimeJava 25, on x64 or arm64
Memory floor4 GB, stated in the official server manual
Port5520 by default
ProtocolQUIC over UDP. TCP forwarding is not required
ModsDrop .zip or .jar files into the server mods folder
BackupsBuilt into the server, default every 30 minutes
UpdatesBuilt-in auto-updater, default check every 3600 seconds
AuthenticationServers sign in with a device login against your Hytale account
Licence limit500 servers per Hytale game licence

How to size it

The manual splits the two resources cleanly. CPU scales with player and entity counts (NPCs and mobs). RAM scales with the loaded world area, so view distance is what drives it, not player count, along with how far apart your players wander. Hypixel recommends capping maximum view distance at 12 chunks, 384 blocks.

There is no published per-player RAM formula for Hytale, so treat the 4 GB floor as a floor and add headroom for view distance rather than for player count alone.

If you would rather not run Java on a spare machine, our Hytale server hosting runs on AMD Ryzen 9 9950X hardware with NVMe storage, DDoS protection and automatic backups, deploys in under a minute, and is priced at a flat €2.50 per GB per month, so the 4 GB the manual asks for is €10 a month. Larger tiers are on the pricing page.

One more thing worth knowing before you plan a network: Hytale routes players between servers natively through player referral, connection redirect and disconnect fallback, so no BungeeCord-style proxy is required. Server owners may also monetise independently, with Hypixel taking nothing for the first two years and a cut that it has said will never exceed 20% after that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hytale out yet?

Yes. Hytale entered Early Access on 13 January 2026 on Windows, macOS and Linux, and has shipped five numbered updates since. It is not finished: Adventure Mode, official minigames and the restored world of Orbis are all still to come.

How much does Hytale cost?

The base edition is a one-time $19.99, priced in USD globally. Two higher editions exist, Supporter and Cursebreaker, which add cosmetics only (capes and outfit sets) and are sold only during Early Access. You can upgrade later and pay just the difference. There is no subscription.

Is Hytale free?

No. It is a one-time purchase with no free tier and no demo. The studio has committed to never adding pay-to-win options.

Is Hytale on Steam?

No. It is sold only through hytale.com and played through its own launcher. The reasons the studio gives are that Steam does not currently support some of its modding features, and that it wants to spend Early Access working with its existing community rather than, in its words, chasing a flood of cold first impressions. It has not ruled Steam out and says it will talk to Valve. A console release is planned for a later stage, with no date given.

Can you play Hytale on Mac or Linux?

Yes. Both were supported at launch, not added later. Linux ships as a Flatpak for x64 on kernel 6.15, and macOS support covers Apple Silicon Macs on macOS Tahoe. Pre-release articles claiming Windows-only launch, including one of our own, were written before 13 January 2026.

How long will Hytale stay in Early Access?

Hypixel has not given a duration. Its own answer is that Early Access will run until the game feels fully polished and ready for release, and the November 2025 announcement said to expect at least a few years with no rush to 1.0.

Does Hytale have an Adventure Mode?

Not yet. Adventure Mode was listed as missing at launch and is described as adding story and narrative, deeper progression and dungeons with boss fights. Its content is arriving piece by piece through chapters inside Exploration Mode instead, starting with Chapter 1.

Is Hytale better than Minecraft?

Not in July 2026, and the studio would not claim otherwise. Hytale has deeper combat, a stronger creative toolset and a cleaner modding architecture. Minecraft has fifteen years of content, an enormous mod ecosystem and a finished game. Hytale is worth $19.99 if the building, modding and server side appeals, or if you want to be there while it develops.

Does Hytale have mods?

Yes, and it was built for them. All modding is server-side, so you join modded servers with an unmodified client. Mods are hosted on CurseForge, an in-game mod browser is on the roadmap, and the server source, protocol and assets are published to licence holders.

Can you play Hytale offline?

Yes, single player works offline once the game is installed. An internet connection is needed for the initial download and for periodic authentication.

How much RAM does a Hytale server need?

At least 4 GB, which is the floor stated in the official server manual. Beyond that, RAM tracks the loaded world area rather than raw player count, so view distance is the variable to watch, and Hypixel recommends capping it at 12 chunks. Our Hytale server plans start at that 4 GB floor.

How many people play Hytale?

No current figure has been published. The defensible launch-window numbers are that Hytale surpassed one million players shortly after launch and was briefly the most-watched game on Twitch with more than 420,000 concurrent viewers on 13 January 2026. Larger concurrent-player figures circulating from launch day trace back to a fake in-game message and should be ignored.

Where to start

Buy it from hytale.com, play Exploration Mode until you have built something, then open Creative Mode, because that is where the game is currently strongest. Check the roadmap before expecting a story.

If you want to play with other people, our Hytale server hosting keeps a world online whether or not your PC is, on Ryzen 9 9950X hardware with automatic backups and worldwide locations, from €10 a month for the 4 GB the official manual asks for.

Launch Your Hytale Server Today

Hytale worlds run on NVMe storage with a 10 Gbps line behind them, and automatic backups come with every plan. A world your group spent weeks on stays recoverable when an update goes sideways.
