Who Is The Commands Man?

The Commands Man treats command blocks as a programming language, building noise algorithms, tree generators and entire minigames without a single mod. The other half of the channel is the AI tests, putting ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini against each other to make add-ons, shaders and mods from scratch. Most of the tutorial work is shot in Bedrock Edition.

Building that way needs operator on your own account and command blocks switched on at the server, and all of it shares one tick loop with everyone's movement and chunk loading. Every setting that governs commands is a plain file you can edit here, on the same hardware whichever edition you pick.

Do I need Java or Bedrock Edition?

It depends on what your group already plays. Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, phones and the Windows app are all Bedrock. Java is the PC-only edition, and it is the one with datapacks, Paper plugins and the modpack ecosystem. Order the edition your friends already own.

Do command blocks work, and do I get operator?

Yes to both, and the switch is not the same on each edition. On Java it is enable-command-block in server.properties, edited in the config editor and applied on the next restart; on Bedrock it is the commandblocksenabled gamerule. Operator is a line in ops.json on Java or permissions.json on Bedrock, both reachable from the file manager or over SFTP. The Bedrock catch is that permissions.json is keyed by XUID rather than gamertag, so the first grant is made from the panel rather than typed in game.

How much RAM does a command block server need?

Less than a modpack. The configurator starts from the Paper sizing the RAM calculator uses, a 4 GB version floor plus 1 GB of plugin headroom, then adds 0.16 GB per player so the plan is not sized to its bare minimum. Fifteen players land on 8 GB. Command blocks are cheap in memory and expensive in tick time, so when a contraption starts lagging the fix is usually fewer repeating blocks firing every tick, not a bigger plan.

Can my friends on Xbox or PlayStation join?

On a Bedrock server, yes, though consoles have no plain address field for third-party servers. Xbox, PlayStation and Switch players add it through the friends list or a DNS workaround, and the panel shows the address and port each method needs. Mobile and Windows players type it straight in with no workaround at all. On a Java server they cannot join without a Geyser and Floodgate proxy, which handles vanilla-style play and copes less well once heavy mods are involved.

Can I upload add-ons, datapacks or a world I already built?

Yes. Behaviour and resource packs on Bedrock, datapacks on Java, and both upload straight into the server's pack folders. A single-player world uploads as a folder, so the contraption you already built moves across instead of being rebuilt block by block. The exception is Marketplace content: add-ons and worlds bought inside the game are tied to your account and cannot be exported onto a dedicated server, so those stay in your own single-player worlds.

What happens to my world if I resize or switch?

A resize between 4 GB and 128 GB is prorated to the day and leaves the world folder in place, and a loader or modpack swap is free and does not rebuild the server. Changing edition is the exception: a Bedrock world will not open on a Java server, or the other way round, because the save formats differ. Take a backup before any of it.

What does it cost, and does a bigger plan tick faster?
