Best Minecraft Seeds for Java
Most seed round-ups give you a number and a promise. This one gives you the number, the version it was tested on, and the coordinates of every structure being claimed, so you can check the claim yourself in about two minutes of spectator flight.
Every seed below is a Java Edition seed published for 26.2, the current release. Coordinates are reproduced exactly as their source published them, including the ones where only X and Z were given. Any landmark without a published 26.2 coordinate was left out rather than estimated.
Read this before you paste a seed
Java Edition stopped using the 1.x scheme. Mojang moved to a year . drop . hotfix numbering system, so the version after 1.21 is not 1.22: it is 26.1, then 26.2. There is no 1.22. Mojang explained the change on the official version numbering announcement.
That matters here because a seed is not a world. It is an input to a world generation algorithm, and when the algorithm changes, the same number produces different terrain. The Minecraft Wiki puts it plainly: whenever world generation is updated, usually by adding biomes, the same seed no longer generates the same terrain. So any list still labeled "best Java seeds for 1.21" is describing worlds that no longer generate that way.
| Version | Released | Worldgen changed? | What it means for seeds |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26.1 Tiny Takeover | 24 March 2026 | No new biomes or structures | Coordinates from late 1.21 seeds still held |
| 26.2 Chaos Cubed | 16 June 2026 | Yes | Added the sulfur caves biome and sulfur springs, so cave layouts shifted |
| 26.3 | Snapshots, planned Q3 2026 | Yes | Adds the dappled forest biome and abandoned camps, so these coordinates will shift again |
How to use a seed in Java Edition
On a single player world you set the seed at creation time and never again. There is no command that changes the seed of a world that already exists.
One detail nobody mentions: a purely numeric seed is used exactly as typed, but any seed containing a letter or symbol (other than a leading minus or plus) is hashed through the Java string hash before use. That is why "cheese" and "Cheese" give completely different worlds, and why a stray space at the end of a pasted seed gives you a world nobody has ever seen.
- Click Singleplayer, then Create New World.
- Open the World tab and paste the seed into the Seed for the World Generator field.
- Check nothing was pasted with a trailing space. A trailing space changes the hash and therefore the world.
- Leave the world type on Default unless a seed says otherwise. Amplified, Large Biomes and Superflat all generate different terrain from the same number.
- Create the world, then press F3 to read your coordinates and navigate to the landmarks below.
Java seeds and Bedrock seeds are not the same thing
This is the single most repeated mistake in seed lists. The truth is more specific than either "they are the same now" or "they are completely different". For 64-bit seeds, terrain and biomes generate the same in both editions, but structures, features, carver caves and mob spawns do not. So a Java seed pasted into Bedrock will usually give you the same mountain and the same mushroom island, and will almost never give you the village at the same coordinates.
That is exactly why the coordinates in our Bedrock seed list are different numbers for similar features. If you play on console, mobile or the Windows version, use that list instead of this one. Everything below is Java only.
Best all-round survival spawns
These are the seeds to pick if you want one world to carry a whole playthrough: food and wood at spawn, a village for beds and trades, and enough underground content that you are never short of a project.
Seed -7417157268905316998: village, ruined portal and trial chamber together
The strongest all-round spawn on this list. A village, a ruined portal about 20 blocks from it and a trial chamber under 60 blocks away, which means beds, trades, your first obsidian and your first real fight are all in the same corner of the map.
The trial chamber is the only one of the four landmarks with a published Y value. The rest were published as X and Z pairs, so dig or fly down when you arrive rather than trusting a Y that was never stated.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Village: X 315, Z 343
- Ruined portal: X 297, Z 340
- Trial chamber: X 294, Y 2, Z 290
- Ocean ruins: X 435, Z 661
Seed -281032838528851848: badlands spawn with a cheese cave underneath
You spawn in eroded badlands, which is unusual for a starter seed because badlands is normally a mid-game destination for gold and terracotta rather than a place to wake up. Everything else is within a few hundred blocks: a plains village for food, a cherry grove for wood that is not brown, and a cheese cave large enough to be a base in its own right.
Cheese caves are the wide, high-ceilinged voids the noise cave generator produces when it carves out most of a chunk. They are the best natural bases in the game because you get volume without mining it, and this one sits directly under spawn.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Plains village: X 76, Y 57, Z 6
- Massive cheese cave: X -3, Y 46, Z 45
- Trial chamber: X -68, Y -18, Z 56
- Mineshaft: X 17, Y 21, Z 156
- Cherry grove: X 8, Y 71, Z -61
Village and trading hall starts
If the plan is a trading hall, what you want is not one village but several close together, because you need a surplus of villagers to breed from and enough professions to cover mending, protection and the tool enchantments you actually use.
Two villages 200 blocks apart are worth more than one large village, because you can move villagers between them by boat or rail without a nether tunnel. If you have never moved villagers before, our guide to breeding villagers in Minecraft covers the bed and food mechanics that make the hall work.
Seed 302304127329527063: four villages ringing spawn
The best trading hall start here. Four taiga and plains villages sit around spawn, close enough that you can walk between them without a compass. A mineshaft, a shipwreck and cold ocean ruins fill in the loot side.
Only the first village has a published position. The other three are within walking distance of it, so the practical approach is to stand at X 32, Z 16 and circle outwards rather than chase a coordinate.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Taiga village: X 32, Y 80, Z 16
- Mineshaft: X -24, Y 100, Z -120
- Shipwreck: X -271, Y 82, Z 185
- Cave entrance: X -96, Y 8, Z -48
- Cold ocean ruins: X 24, Y 78, Z 121
Seed 486362209: villages and desert temples in one cluster
A desert start with four villages and two desert pyramids packed into a small area, with mineshafts running underneath. Desert villages give you the fastest opening in Minecraft: the houses are already stone, there is no forest cover to clear before you can light the area, and the pyramid TNT is an early source of explosives.
Four villages generate here but only three have published positions. The fourth is out there, so walk the gaps between the three below.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Village 1: X -192, Z 32
- Village 2: X -144, Z -176
- Village 3: X 48, Z -144
- Desert temple 1: X -136, Z 24
- Desert temple 2: X 24, Z -232
Seed -3361685360695458093: a quad village that reads as one town
Four villages generated close enough that they overlap into what looks like a single connected settlement. Useful if you would rather build a town than manage a logistics network between four of them. There is a trial chamber within 200 blocks of spawn and an ancient city about 1,000 blocks out for the endgame.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Main quad village: X -144, Y 49, Z 0
- Trial chamber: X 185, Y -27, Z 71
- Ancient city: X 807, Y -51, Z 567
- Ruined portal: X 23, Y 59, Z 364
- Buried treasure: X -1038, Y 32, Z -745
Strongholds and end portals: what is actually possible
Every few months a list promises a "stronghold at spawn" in Java. It is not possible. Java generates exactly 128 strongholds arranged in 8 concentric rings around the world origin, and the innermost ring starts at 1,280 blocks out. Nothing generates closer. Any Java seed advertising an end portal within a few hundred blocks of spawn is either a Bedrock seed relabelled or simply wrong.
So the honest framing is not "stronghold at spawn" but "shortest realistic walk to an end portal". Here is the ring layout, which also tells you how far you need to throw eyes of ender before you should worry:
| Ring | Strongholds | Distance from origin (blocks) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 3 | 1,280 to 2,816 |
| 2 | 6 | 4,352 to 5,888 |
| 3 | 10 | 7,424 to 8,960 |
| 4 | 15 | 10,496 to 12,032 |
| 5 | 21 | 13,568 to 15,104 |
| 6 | 28 | 16,640 to 18,176 |
| 7 | 36 | 19,712 to 21,248 |
| 8 | 9 | 22,784 to 24,320 |
Seed -4496590507308278848: stronghold, ancient city and igloo stacked
The most efficient end portal run on this list. A snowy spawn puts a basement igloo almost directly above both a stronghold and an ancient city, which means one trip gets you the portal room, the echo shards and the disc fragments. A nether fortress sits close to where the portal drops you.
The stronghold at X 548, Z 1540 is about 1,630 blocks from origin, which puts it near the inner edge of ring 1 in the table above. That is roughly as close to spawn as a Java stronghold can generate.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Stronghold: X 548, Z 1540
- Ancient city: X 548, Z 1736
- Igloo with basement: X 648, Z 1544
- Nether fortress: X 126, Z 274 in Nether coordinates
Seed 888880004420377: a stronghold exposed above ground
Strongholds are almost always fully buried, which is why you normally arrive with eyes of ender and then dig. This one breaks the surface: corridors and stone brick walls are visible from outside, and the end portal room is inside the exposed structure. It is a generation curiosity rather than a routine survival seed.
One caveat worth stating. The seed was originally found in 1.16 and has been recirculated for every version since. Its distance from origin of roughly 1,960 blocks is consistent with ring 1, so the coordinate is at least plausible, but load it in a throwaway world and fly out before you commit a survival save to it.
- Version tested: Java 26.2, originally found in 1.16
- Surface stronghold: X 1110, Y 57, Z -1622
Rare biome clusters
Mushroom fields, cherry groves and ice spikes are the three biomes people restart worlds looking for. Mushroom fields are worth the most: it is the only biome where hostile mobs do not spawn naturally on the surface, which makes it the safest base location in the game and the one place you can skip lighting entirely.
Seed 4405134068028: mushroom fields and seven other biomes near spawn
The widest biome spread on this list. Eight distinct biomes fall inside about 1,250 blocks of spawn, and the four closest are inside 300, which is unusual: the biome noise normally spreads that much variety across several thousand blocks.
Pick this one if you want spruce, dark oak and cherry wood, terracotta, sand and mooshrooms reachable on foot instead of behind a nether highway. All positions were published as X and Z only.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Mushroom fields: X 312, Z -112
- Dark forest: X 192, Z 112
- Taiga: X 150, Z 150
- Cherry grove: X 752, Z 81
- Swamp: X -240, Z -662
- Desert: X 950, Z -777
- Badlands: X 819, Z -891
- Snowy plains: X -731, Z 971
Seed 69420018030897796: a village in a lake basin under a cherry grove
A village sitting in a bowl of water with cherry blossom on the ridge above it. Only the village position has been published, so the grove is the thing you can see from it rather than a separate pin.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Village below the cherry grove: X 64, Z 48
Seed 105849523: snowy village ringed by ice spikes
Ice spikes patches are small and scattered, and villages only generate in the snowy plains they sit inside, so a village ringed by spikes is rare enough that this seed has circulated for years. You spawn essentially on top of it, with frozen ocean beyond, a spider dungeon underneath and a lava pool cave for early obsidian.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Snowy village: X 2, Y 89, Z -9
- Spider dungeon: X -50, Y -16, Z -39
- Lava pool cave: X 144, Y -56, Z -32
- Igloo with basement: X 8, Y 120, Z 568
- Ruined portal: X 3, Y 101, Z -283
Seed 1606377695512438131: an ancient city directly under spawn
You spawn on top of a deep dark. The ancient city sits at Y -49 immediately below the world spawn point, which makes this the shortest run to echo shards, disc fragments and armor trims on this page. Its source published the depth as -49 rather than the structure figure of -51, which is what standing on the floor of one looks like on the F3 screen.
Treat it as a loot target, not a horror set piece. If atmosphere is what you are after instead, our scariest Minecraft seeds list picks worlds for how they feel rather than what they contain.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Ancient city: directly under spawn at Y -49
- Cherry grove village: X 173, Z -12
- Mineshaft: X -80, Y 31, Z -33
- Trial chamber: X -238, Y -16, Z -20
Seed 934598: sulfur caves breaking through the surface
The only seed here that comes from Mojang rather than from a seed list. Sulfur caves are new in 26.2: a cave biome of sulfur, cinnabar and sulfur spikes, generating in the same depth band as lush caves and dripstone caves. They are configured for weirdness values between -1.1 and -0.95, and no other biome uses anything below -1.0, so where the noise dips far enough the sulfur cave has nothing to compete with and takes over the surface.
Someone filed that as a bug on Mojang's issue tracker with a one-line reproduction: create a world with seed 934598 and teleport to 0, 70, 0. Mojang closed it as Works As Intended, and the behaviour shipped in the release, so surface sulfur caves are a rare find rather than a defect.
- Version: reported against 26.2 snapshots and kept in the release
- Surface sulfur caves: teleport to X 0, Y 70, Z 0
Structure-rich seeds
If you have played enough survival worlds that the early game bores you, structure density is the thing to optimise for. Two facts make these seeds easier to read.
An ancient city generates at Y -51. That depth is a property of the structure, not of the seed, which is why almost every ancient city coordinate you have ever seen lands within a block or two of the same number. Published figures that read -52, -49 or -48 are people quoting the block they were standing on. A figure nowhere near it is describing something else, and one below Y -64 is describing nothing at all, because that is the bottom of the world.
Trial chambers are on a fixed grid. Added in 1.21, they place roughly one per 34 by 34 chunk region measured from X 0, Z 0, in any Overworld biome except the deep dark. The starting room generates between Y -40 and Y -20 and most other rooms sit between Y -20 and Y 0, so if you are at the right X and Z and finding nothing, you are usually at the wrong depth rather than the wrong place. They are also the only place breezes spawn naturally.
Seed 111111111111111111: 26 ancient cities within 5,000 blocks
Twenty-six ancient cities generate within 5,000 blocks of spawn, which is enough sculk, echo shards and armor trims for an entire server. Only the first city, the village and one mineshaft have published positions, but at that density you will trip over the rest.
A practical warning: sculk shriekers summon the Warden, and 26 cities means 26 chances to get that wrong. Carry a stack of wool. Wool absorbs the vibrations the sculk sensors and shriekers listen for, so placing it under you before you open a chest is the difference between looting a city and leaving it.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- First ancient city: X -210, Y -52, Z -700
- Village: X 0, Z -464
- Mineshaft: X -203, Y -26, Z -653
Seed 184290855362048334: six ancient cities plus a cheese cave
A smaller version of the above with more variety on the way down: six ancient cities, a cheese cave for a base, a trial chamber, a dungeon for a spawner farm and an underground lava lake for a fast obsidian supply.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Ancient city: X -157, Y -48, Z -148
- Cheese cave: X -32, Y 40, Z 192
- Trial chamber: X 265, Y -17, Z 57
- Dungeon: X 69, Y -28, Z -29
- Underground lava lake: X 309, Y 69, Z 20
Seed 844424960210770: woodland mansion on top of spawn
Woodland mansions normally generate thousands of blocks away, which is why most players see their first one only after buying an explorer map. This one straddles a river essentially at spawn.
The value is the totem of undying from the evokers, and the fact that a cleared and lit mansion is a finished multi-floor base you did not have to build. There is a trial chamber and a mineshaft nearby for the rest of the loot loop.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Woodland mansion: X 24, Z 8
- Trial chamber: X 55, Y -22, Z 281
- Mineshaft: X 264, Z -104
- Village: X 256, Z -960
Seed -9215772017318341931: four witch huts around a mansion
Four swamp huts generate in a rough ring around a woodland mansion. Four huts in range of each other is the basis of a stacked witch farm, and the mansion in the middle gives you the totems. Redstone, glowstone dust and gunpowder from one build, with an evoker source next door.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Woodland mansion: X 504, Z 456
- Witch huts: X 360 Z 376, X 376 Z 520, X 536 Z 536, and X 536 Z 344
Seed 8110137054462309706: pillager outpost between two villages
A savanna village east of spawn, a pillager outpost a few hundred blocks south of it, a ruined portal past that, and a second village beyond. Outposts near villages mean raids are easy to trigger and easy to farm, and this layout gives you two raid targets and an outpost to pull the bad omen from.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Savanna village: X 225, Z 0
- Pillager outpost: X 215, Z 261
- Ruined portal: X 347, Z 242
- Second village: X 523, Z 266
- Cherry grove: X 202, Z -382
- Bamboo jungle: X 524, Z -299
Seed -3122719057099512664: outpost, village and temple inside 150 blocks
The densest small area on this list. A pillager outpost generates almost on top of a desert village, with a desert temple just past it: the whole cluster spans under 100 blocks. An ancient city sits underneath the region at the usual Y -51.
The outpost being that close to the village means raids arrive early, so build the iron golem farm before you go looking for a fight.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Pillager outpost: X 25, Y 96, Z 72
- Desert village: X 59, Y 89, Z 50
- Desert temple: X 39, Y 80, Z 145
- Ruined portal: X -247, Y 87, Z 139
- Ancient city: X 200, Y -51, Z 56
Speedrun-friendly seeds
A speedrun seed is not a seed with good loot. It is a seed where the three fixed bottlenecks (obsidian, blaze rods, ender pearls) and the stronghold are all short walks apart.
Seed -4496590507308278848, covered above, is the strongest current-version option on this page: the igloo basement, the stronghold and the ancient city sit within about 200 blocks of each other, and the nether fortress is close to the portal exit. That is the whole run without a search phase.
Seed -4517475607999363428: a fast Nether
An island spawn, then a nether fortress and a bastion remnant both near the portal exit. Blaze rods and pigling bartering in the same trip, which is normally the slowest half of any run. Both coordinates below are Nether coordinates, not Overworld ones.
- Version tested: Java 26.2
- Nether fortress: X 13, Z 27 in the Nether
- Bastion remnant: X 25, Z -119 in the Nether
The famous set-seed runs are 1.16 seeds, not 26.2 seeds
Two seeds appear on nearly every speedrun list, including several that label them as current. They are not. Both are 1.16-era seeds, and 1.16 world generation predates the cave and cliffs rewrite, the deep dark, trial chambers and sulfur caves. The coordinates below hold on 1.16 and should not be expected to hold on 26.2.
They are still worth running if you want to race the same world the record runs used. Just set your launcher to 1.16 first.

Using a chosen seed on a multiplayer server
On a server the seed lives in server.properties, in the level-seed field. It is blank by default, and a blank field means a random seed. The companion setting is level-type, which stays on minecraft:normal unless you want large biomes or superflat.
The critical part: level-seed is read only when the world is generated for the first time. Setting it on a server that already has a world does nothing at all. The server reads the existing world folder, ignores the property, and you will spend an hour convinced the seed is broken.
One more operational detail specific to the current versions. Minecraft 26.1 and newer require Java 25, not Java 21. If you are running your own hardware, check your runtime before blaming the seed for a server that will not start. On a managed host the runtime is matched to the version for you.
Applying a seed to a new server
On a fresh server this is three steps and takes about a minute. If you have not set a server up before, our guide to making a Minecraft server covers the rest of the process.
- Create the server but do not start it yet.
- Open server.properties and set the seed, exactly as written, with no trailing space.
- Start the server. The world generates from your seed on that first boot.
Regenerating an existing server on a new seed
Because the property is ignored once a world exists, changing seeds on a live server means deleting the world first. This destroys everything anyone has built, so take a backup before you touch anything, and tell your players.
Do this in order. If you delete the Overworld folder but leave world_nether in place, you get a Nether that no longer lines up with the Overworld above it, and portals start linking to the wrong places.
- Stop the server. Do not do this while it is running: the world is written on shutdown and you will get a half-saved folder.
- Take a full backup. On CraftLands this is one click in the panel, covered in creating a server backup.
- Delete or rename the world folder, plus world_nether and world_the_end. Renaming is safer than deleting if you might want the old world back.
- Set level-seed to your new seed and save the file.
- Start the server. Watch the console: the world generates from scratch, which takes longer than a normal boot.
Pre-generate before you let people in
Worth doing on any server, and especially on the structure-dense seeds above, because those are the ones where players sprint 2,000 blocks in a straight line on day one. Generating chunks on demand while players explore is one of the most common causes of lag spikes, and generating them in advance removes it entirely. How to pre-generate a Minecraft world walks through it.
Also lock your server version. 26.3 changes world generation again, so a server that auto-updates mid-playthrough will start generating dappled forests and abandoned camps at the edges of a world that does not have them, and the border between old and new chunks will be visible. Changing your server version is a deliberate action for exactly this reason.
If you want the world to exist whether or not your computer does, our Minecraft server hosting runs on the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X with NVMe storage, deploys in under a minute, and costs €2.50 per GB of RAM per month, so a 4 GB server is €10. You set level-seed before first boot and the world is the one you picked.
How to check a seed before you commit to it
Ten minutes of verification saves a restart forty hours in. The process that actually works:
- Create a throwaway world on the seed in creative mode with the same version you plan to play.
- Fly to the coordinates you care about in spectator. Structures load at render distance, so fly high.
- Confirm the two or three landmarks you actually care about, not all of them. If the village and the stronghold are where they should be, the rest of the list is probably fine.
- Delete the throwaway world and create your real one on the same seed.
A note on seed map sites
Online seed maps are the fastest way to check a claim, and Chunkbase updated its map for 26.2 in July 2026. Use them, with one caveat that its own developers state: many features are not 100 percent accurate, and dungeons, temples and end cities sometimes fail to generate or show at the wrong coordinates.
So a seed map is a good way to disprove a claim quickly and a mediocre way to prove one. If the map shows nothing at all where a village should be, the seed is probably wrong. If it shows one, still fly there.

Where to go next
Pick one seed, verify the two landmarks you actually care about in a throwaway creative world, then start for real. Chasing a perfect spawn is how worlds get restarted rather than played.
If the plan is a world with friends in it, set level-seed before the first boot and pre-generate the area around spawn. Our Minecraft server hosting deploys in under a minute with DDoS protection and automatic backups, and you can pick the version so the seed keeps generating the world you chose.
