Best Minecraft Modpacks in 2026

July 28, 2026
David Hagiu

There is no single best modpack, only the pack that matches what your group actually wants to do for the next few months. This guide covers 33 packs across every major style, and for each one it gives the loader, the Minecraft version and the server RAM it genuinely needs, not a marketing number.

How to pick a Minecraft modpack

Four things decide whether a pack works for your group, and only one of them is the mod list.

  • Playstyle first. A kitchen-sink pack and an RPG pack are different games. Ask the group whether they want to build machines, clear dungeons, run a colony or collect creatures, then pick inside that answer. A pack nobody wants to play is not saved by having 500 mods in it.
  • Mod count is not difficulty. Create: Above and Beyond ships 136 mods and is one of the hardest packs here, while Better MC (BMC4) carries more than 350 and plays like ordinary survival. Mod count predicts startup time and memory, not challenge.
  • The loader pins your Minecraft version. Forge, NeoForge and Fabric are not interchangeable, and most large packs are built for one specific Minecraft release. Older packs on 1.12.2 also need Java 8 rather than Java 17 or 21, so the runtime has to match the pack.
  • Hardware demand varies enormously. Before anyone joins, Cobblemon needs 4 GB and All the Mods 10 needs 12 GB. That is a three-fold difference in what the server costs you every month, so check it before you commit a group to a pack.

What the RAM numbers in this guide mean

Every RAM figure below is the amount the server needs, not the amount a player allocates in their launcher. The two are usually confused, and pack pages almost always quote the client figure.

A modded server has a fixed cost for the pack itself, then a roughly linear cost per concurrent player:

needed GB = pack base + 0.2 x concurrent players

Turning that into a plan size

Round the result up to the next plan tier: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16 or 24 GB. The recommended figure quoted for each pack in this guide is that rounded number, and the player count in brackets is what the spare headroom above the pack base actually covers. Our Minecraft RAM calculator does the same arithmetic for any pack in the list.

Pricing is per GB, so the RAM figure is the price: at €2.50 per GB per month, an 8 GB pack costs €20 and a 12 GB pack costs €30. Full tiers are on the pricing page, and every CraftLands Minecraft server runs on the AMD Ryzen 9 9950X with NVMe storage, which matters more than RAM once a pack is ticking thousands of block entities.

One caveat worth stating early: RAM stops being the problem surprisingly quickly. Above the pack floor, most modded lag is CPU time spent ticking machines, entities and fresh chunk generation. Buying a bigger plan will not fix a base with four hundred chunk-loaded machines in it.

Kitchen sink modpacks

Kitchen sink packs put tech, magic, storage and exploration in one world and let you choose. They suit a group that wants a single server to live in for months, where one person automates, another builds and another explores, and nobody is forced down the same path. They are also the heaviest category to host, because a mature world runs dozens of independent automation systems at once.

All the Mods 10 modpack server hosting

All the Mods 10

NeoForge · 1.21.1
Deploy

The current flagship of the series, 478 mods in release 7.2, built around the Allthemodium ore chain that runs from the Deep Dark up to the ATM Star. Server cost comes from Mekanism factories and AE2 autocrafting rather than headcount.

All the Mods 9 modpack server hosting

All the Mods 9

Forge · 1.20.1
Deploy

432 mods, and the entry that still carries Botania and GregTech CEu Modern, neither of which is in ATM10. Its final release landed in October 2025, so the mod list has stopped moving, which is what you want for a world you intend to keep for a year.

All the Mods 8 modpack server hosting

All the Mods 8

Forge · 1.19.2
Deploy

381 mods, frozen at version 1.1.0 since December 2023. That freeze is the selling point, since no update will move a recipe under a finished base. It is one of the heaviest packs we host.

Craftoria modpack server hosting

Craftoria

NeoForge · 1.21.1
Deploy

540 mods with more than 2,000 FTB Quests written to introduce each mod rather than only pay out rewards. Chunk generation is where it hurts, so pregenerate before the first session.

Enigmatica 6 modpack server hosting

Enigmatica 6

Forge · 1.16.5
Deploy

360 mods, and the download carries a normal and an expert config set side by side, so harder recipe rules are a swap inside the same pack instead of a separate install. Runs on Java 8.

MC Eternal modpack server hosting

MC Eternal

Forge · 1.12.2
Deploy

Around 380 mods with deliberately basic crafting recipes and nine optional quest chapters, from Agriculture through Space Exploration. Quests pay currency you spend in a dynamic Player Shop, which is why groups tend to specialise.

Valhelsia 6 modpack server hosting

Valhelsia 6

Forge · 1.20.1
Deploy

286 mods and, unusually, no quest book at all. Nothing tells you what to do next, which suits sandbox groups and frustrates anyone who wants a checklist. Agree a rough goal before the first session or people drift.

Adventure and RPG modpacks

These packs replace the progression rather than extend it. Combat gets stamina, dodges and movesets, gear rolls stats, and the reason to leave your base is a dungeon rather than a resource. They tend to cost the server in entities and chunk generation instead of machines, which means a group that splits up across the map is the worst case rather than a group building together.

Open-world RPG and exploration

For groups who want to wander. The load here is worldgen, so pregenerating a few thousand blocks around spawn is the single most effective thing you can do before inviting people.

RLCraft modpack server hosting

RLCraft

Forge · 1.12.2
Deploy

177 mods in release 2.9.3. You cannot punch trees, SimpleDifficulty adds thirst and body temperature, First Aid swaps the health bar for individual body parts, and Reskillable gates weapons and armor behind skill levels. Brutal by design.

DawnCraft modpack server hosting

DawnCraft

Forge · 1.18.2
Deploy

Over 200 mods turning Minecraft into a souls-like. Epic Fight replaces the vanilla swing with stamina and dodges, and basic crafting is locked until you earn it: the anvil comes from Knight Rober, the enchantment table from Nine Tails. Knowledge unlocks are per player, so latecomers start at the first boss.

Better MC (BMC5) modpack server hosting

Better MC (BMC5)

NeoForge · 1.21.1
Deploy

Over 320 mods on current Minecraft. Vanilla progression stays intact while the world is redrawn, with rewritten strongholds and fortresses, Dragon Mounts Remastered, then the Twilight Forest and the Aether behind that. Open Parties and Claims ships inside it.

Better MC (BMC4) modpack server hosting

Better MC (BMC4)

Forge · 1.20.1
Deploy

The Forge branch of the same series, 350 or more mods and 100 or more quests on 1.20.1, with a vanilla backport pulling later content into the older world. The Aether returns as a full second dimension, which is a large part of why it wants headroom.

Medieval MC (MMC4) modpack server hosting

Medieval MC (MMC4)

Forge · 1.20.1
Deploy

350 or more mods bent entirely toward a fantasy kingdom, with MineColonies settlements running alongside five separate magic systems. Tick time here grows with each colony your players found, not with the number of people online.

Rebirth of the Night modpack server hosting

Rebirth of the Night

Forge · 1.12.2
Deploy

397 mods and its own textures, models and forked builds, which is why the download runs past a gigabyte. Monsters mine and build to reach you, so mob AI rather than machinery is what eats the tick. Java 8 is not optional here.

Dungeon runs, campaigns and loot grinds

For groups who prefer a run with an objective and a reward at the end. These packs give you a reason to log on for an evening instead of a project that spans months.

Vault Hunters modpack server hosting

Vault Hunters

Forge · 1.18.2
Deploy

An action RPG built around one dimension. A Vault Crystal opens a procedural dungeon that exists for exactly one run, carrying one of six objectives, and clearing it pays levels, abilities and Knowledge Stars that unlock the pack one mod at a time. Size the plan for how many people vault at once, not the whitelist.

RAD 2 modpack server hosting

RAD 2

Forge · 1.16.5
Deploy

Over 250 mods pointed outward, with more than 1500 quests, 100 or more biomes and 12 or more dimensions. Gear, trinkets and mobs roll random modifiers and rarities, so two runs through the same dungeon pay differently. Normal, Expert and Master stages set mob scaling for the whole world.

Prominence II modpack server hosting

Prominence II

Fabric · 1.20.1
Deploy

The Hasturian Era release pulls in more than 650 CurseForge projects around a talent tree of 10 fates, 16 passive talents, 5 active abilities and 100 stat talents. The campaign hands you a Molten Core to forge an artifact weapon, then Artifact Power to upgrade it. Lootr means everyone opens their own dungeon chest.

Craft to Exile 2 modpack server hosting

Craft to Exile 2

Forge · 1.20.1
Deploy

Mine and Slash rebuilds the game as a Path of Exile style ARPG, with a five-act campaign of more than 250 quests and bosses pinned to fixed levels. The pack wiki asks for an automatic restart every six hours, because performance degrades if the server is left running.

DarkRPG modpack server hosting

DarkRPG

Fabric · 1.20.1
Deploy

522 mods laying a character sheet over survival. You pick an Aspect, an Origin, a Type, a Divine Aspect and a Class, then work two separate quest systems holding more than 1800 quests between them. The per-player cost is Origins data syncing on join.

Skyblock and expert modpacks

Skyblock removes terrain cost, not tick cost. There is almost nothing to generate, so exploring barely registers, but a mature island still moves hundreds of items every tick and the bill arrives anyway. Expert packs are the other half of this category: same mods, deliberately harder recipe chains, and a playthrough measured in months, not weekends.

Survival twists and horror modpacks

Packs that keep survival as the point and change what survival means: a harder ruleset, a town to run, a city to loot, or something hunting you after dark. Most of them suit a fixed group of three to six who play on the same evenings rather than a public server people wander through.

TerraFirmaGreg-Modern modpack server hosting

TerraFirmaGreg-Modern

Forge · 1.20.1
Deploy

Two total overhauls welded onto one world. TerraFirmaCraft replaces survival with knapping, rock layers, ore prospecting and heat management, and GregTech Modern replaces progression with chemistry and voltage tiers. The opening hours are genuinely about banging rocks together.

Life in the Village 3 modpack server hosting

Life in the Village 3

Forge · 1.19.2
Deploy

287 mods sitting deliberately close to vanilla, with MineColonies at the centre. A colony starts with a town hall and a builder and grows to farmers, guards, enchanters and a university. The shipped config allows up to 250 citizens in one colony, so plan capacity around towns, not players.

Fear Nightfall modpack server hosting

Fear Nightfall

Forge · 1.20.1
Deploy

298 mods and a horror campaign of seven numbered chapters told through a quest book. Simple Voice Chat ships inside the pack, so the group talks positionally from the first night, and a separate sanity bar drains throughout. The server only struggles after dark, which is by design.

DeceasedCraft modpack server hosting

DeceasedCraft

Forge · 1.20.1
Deploy

A procedurally generated modern city built with The Lost Cities, five hand-crafted districts holding over sixty custom buildings and more than 800 loot tables. Progression runs through Create and Immersive Engineering. Enable command blocks in server.properties or multiblocks and vehicle spawns quietly fail.

Crazy Craft Updated modpack server hosting

Crazy Craft Updated

Forge · 1.16.5
Deploy

An unofficial rebuild of the old Crazy Craft chaos, 331 mods with Chaos Awakens standing in for OreSpawn. Scaling Health raises difficulty as the world ages and Progressive Bosses makes the Wither harder with every kill. Three biome generators feed worldgen at once, so pregenerate before you invite anyone.

Server RAM for every modpack on this list

The tables below give the loader, the Minecraft version and the recommended server RAM for all 33 packs. The recommended figure is the first plan tier that clears the pack floor with room for a normal group, and the number in brackets is how many concurrent players that headroom covers at 0.2 GB each.

If your group is larger, or smaller, run the numbers through the RAM calculator instead of guessing. Two things it accounts for that a table cannot: packs where the load is machines rather than people, and packs where a single extra dimension being open changes the answer.

Running any of them with friends

A modded server needs the same mod loader, the same loader version and the same mod list as every client connecting to it. That single rule causes most of the problems people hit, and it is why one-click installs exist.

On CraftLands, every pack in this guide installs with its loader before first boot and updates from the panel when a new version ships. Each one has its own setup page in the modpack library, and any other pack from CurseForge or Modrinth installs the same way even without a dedicated page.

Four things worth doing before you invite people

Every one of these is cheaper to do now than to fix once a group has already started building.

  1. Agree the pack version and make sure everyone installs exactly that build. A mismatched mod list is rejected at the handshake, not tolerated.
  2. Pregenerate a few thousand blocks around spawn. Chunk generation is the most expensive thing most of these packs ask for, and doing it once ahead of time removes it from every session afterwards.
  3. Settle any world-level choice that cannot be changed later: the world type on SkyFactory 4, the pack mode on Project Ozone 3, the difficulty stage on RAD 2, expert or normal on Enigmatica 6.
  4. Check whether progression is per player. On SevTech: Ages and DawnCraft it is, so anyone joining late starts at the beginning while the rest of you are three ages ahead.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best Minecraft modpack?

There is no single answer, because the packs in this guide are not playing the same game. For a group that wants one long shared project, All the Mods 10 or Craftoria fit. For a group that wants combat and dungeons, DawnCraft or Vault Hunters fit better. Pick the playstyle first and the pack second.

Which modpack should I start with if I have never played modded?

Something that does not ask you to learn a tech tree on the first evening. Better MC (BMC5) keeps vanilla rules and simply makes the world larger, Cobblemon is a social catching loop with no machines in it at all, and FTB StoneBlock 3 has a quest book that never assumes you already know a mod.

How much RAM does a modded Minecraft server need?

Between 4 and 12 GB before a single player joins, depending entirely on the pack, plus roughly 0.2 GB per concurrent player on top. Cobblemon needs 4 GB to boot and All the Mods 10 needs 12 GB to boot. As a general rule a Forge or NeoForge modpack wants 12 GB for around 20 players, Fabric 8 GB, and plain vanilla or Paper 6 GB. The RAM calculator sizes it per pack.

What is the best Create modpack?

The two purpose-built ones pull in different directions. Create: Above and Beyond is the official challenge pack from the mod author, small at 136 mods and structured as one long engineering brief for two to six people sharing an assembly line. Create: Astral is broader at 202 mods and routes other mods back through Create, with the Moon, Mars and Mercury as real destinations. Above and Beyond closed out at version 1.3 in December 2021, so its mod set is frozen, while Astral is on v2.1.5, which added alternate recipes for the chapter most groups stall on.

What are the best expert modpacks?

Project Ozone 3 in Titan or Kappa mode, SevTech: Ages for gated progression that hides the game until you unlock it, Divine Journey 2 for 1600 quests across magic and machinery, and TerraFirmaGreg-Modern if you want survival itself rebuilt as well. Enigmatica 6 is the gentlest way in, since its expert config set is a swap inside the same pack.

Are there modpacks for Bedrock Edition?

Not in the sense meant here. Modpacks are Java Edition only, so every player joining a modded server needs Java Minecraft with the matching pack installed. Bedrock uses add-ons instead, which are a separate system and will not run on a Java modded server. Geyser bridges Bedrock clients onto a Java server, but not onto one running a pack that needs mods on the client as well, which is every pack in this guide.

Where do these modpacks come from?

All 33 packs here are published on CurseForge, and many are also on Modrinth. Both platforms install the same way from the panel, so the choice is about which one the pack author publishes to rather than anything on the server side. See installing a custom modpack for anything outside the featured list.

Can I switch modpacks later without buying another server?

Yes. Swapping to a different pack is a panel action on the same server at the same price, and the world is backed up first. Worth knowing before you commit: worlds do not carry across packs, and usually not across major versions of the same pack either, so a switch means a fresh start rather than a migration.

Which modpacks run on the newest Minecraft version?

Six packs in this guide are on 1.21.1: All the Mods 10, Craftoria, Better MC (BMC5), Pixelmon, Cobblemon and Cobbleverse. Plenty of well-regarded packs are still on 1.12.2, 1.16.5 or 1.20.1 because the mods they depend on never moved forward, and that is normal rather than a sign of neglect.

Why does my modded server lag when there is RAM to spare?

Because the bottleneck is CPU time, not memory. Machines, entities and fresh chunk generation all cost tick time, and a tick that takes longer than 50 ms puts the server behind no matter how much heap is free. Check what is ticking before buying a bigger plan: chunk-loaded automation running while nobody is online is the usual culprit, followed by a group exploring in four different directions at once.

Where to go next

Pick the pack by playstyle, then check its RAM figure in the tables above before you promise anyone a server. Every pack in this guide has its own page in the modpack library with the full detail on what it costs to run and why.

When you are ready, a CraftLands Minecraft server starts at €10 a month, the pack and its loader go on before first boot, and the server is live in under a minute. If you are still unsure what size you need, the RAM calculator will answer it in about thirty seconds.

Start Your Minecraft Server Today

Pick a plan and your Minecraft server is online in about 30 seconds, with Paper plugins and Forge modpacks one click away in the panel. Full file access and SFTP are there when you go deeper, and automatic backups turn a broken config into a restore, not a rebuild.
