Best Minecraft Horror Modpacks to Play With Friends

Ten Minecraft horror modpacks with the loader, version and latest release of each, and how each plays with a group on voice chat.

QUICK ANSWER

For a group that wants a story, start with Cave Horror Project 1 or Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos, both quest-book campaigns on Forge 1.20.1. For something that stalks you in the dark, pick DREAD or From the Fog Reimagined, and for zombies, DeceasedCraft or Cursed Walking. All ten packs below install from CurseForge on Java Edition and include proximity voice chat.

Every pack below was checked on 30 September 2026 against its CurseForge page and the manifest inside its latest file, so the loader, Minecraft version and release dates are the ones you will download today. All ten are Java Edition packs, nine on Forge and one on Fabric, and all ten ship Simple Voice Chat. What sets them apart is what hunts you and how each one treats a group.

Story and campaign horror

Both packs here give the group a quest book with numbered chapters, so a session has a goal beyond surviving the night.

Cave Horror Project 1

Cave Horror Project 1 is a Forge 1.20.1 pack of 191 mods built around a questline of over 240 quests in six chapters, by its author's count. It adds Herobrine events and bosses from the ArPhEx mod. The things in the dark come from mods such as The Man From The Fog, Cave Dweller Reimagined, The Knocker and The Obsessed.

For a group it adds Simple Voice Radio next to Simple Voice Chat, so you can craft walkie-talkies and keep talking when the party splits up underground. The author describes the quest and event system as multiplayer friendly.

Fear Nightfall: Remains of Chaos

CurseForge sums up Fear Nightfall in three words: made for co-op. Version 1.1.4 runs 298 mods on Forge 1.20.1 and tells its story through a quest book of seven numbered chapters that ends at Mother of Chaos. Sanity: Descent Into Madness adds a sanity meter, and as it drops you start hearing and seeing things.

Simple Voice Chat is built in, and Vivecraft is in the list for anyone who wants to play in VR. If the campaign needs to stay online between sessions, Fear Nightfall server hosting installs the pack and its Forge loader before first boot.

Stalker, dweller and Backrooms packs

These packs care less about a story and more about what follows you: replaced mobs, fog, cave dwellers and liminal hallways.

DREAD

DREAD by the YouTuber Arrenek removes every vanilla hostile mob and replaces them with creatures that stalk and chase you. The current line, DREAD Reborn 3.1.1, is 150 mods on Forge 1.19.2 and adds seasons, thirst, a few guns and new shaders.

The pack page is written for groups: play with your friends on the included proximity chat, and do not lose them in the dark. There is no server pack, so the author's advice is to copy the files to the server and remove the client-side mods yourself.

From the Fog Reimagined

From the Fog Reimagined is a Herobrine pack its author says was inspired by Calvin and other horror Minecraft players. Expect the Man from the Fog in the mist, the Cave Dweller underground and events triggered by what you do. Version 6.1.2 is 123 mods on Forge 1.20.1, and the page warns about loud sounds and flashing jumpscares.

Its author sizes the server at 5 GB for 10 players, increasing with the player count.

Endless Horror

Endless Horror puts nearly every horror mod for its version into one Forge 1.19.2 pack. Its 152 mods include over 100 horror mods by the author's count, among them The Obsessed, The One Who Watches and The Anomaly. One mod deliberately corrupts your world, and the author gives /corruption false to switch it off.

For a group, Essential is in the mod list, so the world owner can invite friends without a server. The page warns about loud sounds and flashing lights, and the author strongly recommends its Insanity shader and VHS filter.

Into The Backrooms: Found Footage

Into The Backrooms: Found Footage by kamussy is the only Fabric pack here, 42 mods on Minecraft 1.20.1. You get in by suffocating in sand or gravel, then work through levels from The Lobby to The Poolrooms until an Infinite Grass Field lets you out.

It is the pack that most needs friends. The Lobby's skinwalker only exists in multiplayer: it takes over a player's body and uses their microphone to fool everyone else. Essential and Simple Voice Chat are both included, and the author's minimum is a PC with 8 GB of RAM and 4 GB allocated to the game.

Zombie apocalypse packs

Zombie packs trade jump scares for pressure that builds: hordes, loot runs and a base to defend. Three of the four also ship Voiceless Survival, a mod that lets mobs hear what you say into Simple Voice Chat.

DeceasedCraft

DeceasedCraft drops you into a procedurally generated city built with The Lost Cities, split into five hand-crafted districts with over 60 custom buildings, and hands progression to Create and Immersive Engineering. The current 5.10.17 beta on Forge 1.20.1 cannot be completed yet, because the Wasteland and Abyss districts are missing. The complete release is 5.5.5 on Minecraft 1.18.2.

The authors are direct about groups: LAN multiplayer is not advised, so use the server pack and run a server. Horde waves scale on each player's own playtime, and command blocks must be enabled in server.properties or multiblocks and vehicle spawns fail.

Cursed Walking

Cursed Walking is a zombie apocalypse of 245 mods on Forge 1.20.1 (v3.3 patch). Its zombies spawn day and night, climb on top of each other and gather into a horde every ten days. Later days bring runners and brutes, and the endgame is a dimension called the Depths.

Its FAQ answers the multiplayer question directly. Essential and e4mc work but have known issues with a pack this size, and the author recommends a server unless you are fewer than three. Server files are posted under Additional Files for each version.

ZOMBIEMANIA

ZOMBIEMANIA is the newest pack here, first uploaded in June 2025: 310 mods on Forge 1.20.1 in V2.1 C2, set in a wintry world. Its summary is the group pitch: they hear your voices, they react to your gunshots and they smell your blood.

That line is literal. Voiceless Survival lets hostile mobs hear your microphone through Simple Voice Chat, and Zombie Awareness has zombies track blood, sound and light, so a loud voice call draws them in.

Biohazard: Project Genesis

Biohazard: Project Genesis is a story-driven apocalypse by Void Cube Studios, still in public beta at 0.4.6.1 on Forge 1.20.1. It has radiation, fungal infection, a quest campaign and over 100 guns and melee weapons. With 496 mods in its manifest plus four bundled jars it is the heaviest pack here, and its minimum spec is 16 GB of system RAM with about 6 GB allocated.

For groups it carries Simple Voice Radio next to Simple Voice Chat, plus Voiceless Survival, so radios keep a split party talking and anyone speaking near a mob draws it in.

Playing a horror pack with friends

Everyone needs the same pack version on the same loader, so agree on the file before anyone installs. After that you can play from one player's world or from a server.

Without a server

Endless Horror, DREAD and Into The Backrooms already include Essential, which lets the world owner invite friends for free. It takes up to 8 players at once, everyone needs the exact same mods, and the world is only open while its owner is playing. For bigger packs the authors push back. Cursed Walking recommends a server unless you are fewer than three, and DeceasedCraft advises against LAN altogether. Playing Minecraft with friends covers the other free routes.

On a server

A server keeps the world running between sessions and takes the load off the player whose PC used to run it. Size it from the pack: on CraftLands' sizing, Fear Nightfall needs 8 GB for 10 players and DeceasedCraft 12 GB for 20, each a pack base plus 0.2 GB per player. For the other packs, the RAM calculator starts a Forge pack at a 6 GB floor and adds 0.2 GB per player.

The panel's modpack installer finds packs on CurseForge by name, and installing a modpack walks through it, including picking the pack version that matches your group.

Voice chat and lag after dark

Simple Voice Chat talks over its own UDP port, 24454 by default. If voice will not connect on a server, check that port first: the voice chat guide shows how to add a port in the panel, and on a modpack the file to edit is config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties.

If the server stutters when night falls and the mobs spawn, measure it before you add RAM. Six of the ten packs (Fear Nightfall, From the Fog Reimagined, Endless Horror, DeceasedCraft, ZOMBIEMANIA and Biohazard) already include spark. Run /spark profiler start while it lags, /spark profiler stop after about three minutes, then paste the link into the spark report analyzer to see which mod is eating the tick.

Frequently asked questions

What is the scariest Minecraft horror modpack?

There is no measured ranking, so it depends on what scares your group. DREAD removes every vanilla hostile mob and replaces them with creatures that stalk you, Endless Horror stacks over 100 horror mods into one pack, and Into The Backrooms has a skinwalker that borrows a friend's microphone. For a story with scares along the way, Cave Horror Project 1 and Fear Nightfall are the campaign packs.

Do Minecraft horror modpacks cost money?

The ten packs on this page are free downloads on CurseForge, and they run on Minecraft: Java Edition. Some authors offer extras through Patreon, such as the experimental 5.11 build of DeceasedCraft.

Are there horror modpacks for Minecraft Bedrock?

Not these. CurseForge modpacks are Java Edition mods run through loaders such as Forge and Fabric. Bedrock Edition uses add-ons instead, a separate format that exists only on Bedrock, so horror on Bedrock comes from add-ons rather than modpacks.

Where to go next

For a scare without mods, the scariest Minecraft seeds work on vanilla Java and Bedrock. For every other genre, the best Minecraft modpacks guide covers 33 packs with the loader, version and RAM each one needs.

Run This on a Modded Minecraft Server

Pick any pack on CurseForge or Modrinth and we install it with its loader and its Minecraft version before first boot, so nothing has to be matched up by hand. Forge, Fabric and NeoForge all run on the same Ryzen 9 9950X at €2.50 per GB.
