Can You Add Mods to Minecraft Realms? Java vs Bedrock

Java Realms cannot run mods; Bedrock Realms take add-ons. What works on each edition, how to add it, and where a modded Java world can run.

QUICK ANSWER

Not on Java Edition: a Java Realm runs Mojang's unmodified server, so mods and plugins cannot be installed, although data packs and mods that only run on your own game still work. Bedrock Realms do take add-ons, from the Marketplace or uploaded inside a world. For modded Java, the group needs a server that runs a mod loader such as Fabric or NeoForge.

The answer depends on the edition, because Realms is split in two: minecraft.net says a Java player can only join a Java Realm and a Bedrock player only a Bedrock one. If you are not sure which your group plays, our comparison of Java and Bedrock covers the devices each one runs on.

What a Realm can run on each edition

What you want to add

Java Realm

Bedrock Realm

Mods that add blocks, items or mobs

No

Java only; Bedrock uses add-ons

Server plugins (Paper, Spigot)

No

Java only

Data packs

Yes, inside a world you upload, unless they use experimental settings

Java only; Bedrock uses behavior packs

Client-side mods such as Sodium and Iris

Yes, on each player's own game

Java only

Resource packs

Yes, each player loads their own

Yes, applied to the world and offered to players when they join

Add-ons (behavior and resource packs)

Bedrock only

Yes, from the Marketplace or uploaded inside a world

A Realm always runs the latest release. For Java that is 26.3, out since 15 September 2026 in Mojang's version manifest, so every mod you add to your own game needs a 26.3 build.

Why a Java Realm cannot run mods

A Java Realm runs the official vanilla server jar, and the Realms limitations on minecraft.wiki say it plainly: mods and plugins cannot be installed. You can upload, download or reset a world, but there is no way to add a mod loader or a mods folder.

That rules out content mods, the kind that add something new to the world. Create, Farmer's Delight, Handcrafted and Carry On all add blocks or mechanics, and their Modrinth pages list each one as required on the server, not only on the players' games.

Some guides say you can load mods with /datapack enable. That command only turns data packs on and off, so it cannot load a mod file.

What you can add to a Java Realm

Mods that only run on your own game

Some mods never touch the server. Modrinth labels them client-side only and describes that as compatible with vanilla servers, which is what a Realm is. Sodium for frame rate and Iris for shaders both sit in this group, and each player installs the ones they want.

The catch is the version. Your game has to be on the Realm's version, so a client mod is only usable once it has a 26.3 build. Sodium and Iris both had Fabric builds for 26.3 on Modrinth on 30 September 2026, while the "Realms +" client pack on CurseForge was built for 1.20.1 in July 2023 and cannot join a current Realm.

Resource packs work the same way: each player turns theirs on under Options, then Resource Packs.

Data packs inside a world you upload

Data packs can change recipes, loot tables, structures, advancements and biomes, and a Java Realm plays them when they come inside a world you upload.

  1. 1In singleplayer on 26.3, add the data pack to a world: put the .zip in the world's datapacks folder, or add it under More, then Data Packs, when you create the world.
  2. 2Load the world once to check it opens without errors.
  3. 3If the Realm's current world matters to you, download a backup of it first.
  4. 4The Realm owner uploads the world from the Realm's settings, replacing one of its three world slots.

Data packs that use experimental settings are the exception: minecraft.wiki notes that uploading a world with one of them to Realms fails with a server error.

How to add add-ons to a Bedrock Realm

Bedrock Realms take add-ons, the behavior packs and resource packs Bedrock uses where Java uses mods. There are two ways to get them onto the Realm.

From the Marketplace

Realms Plus includes the Marketplace Pass, a rotating catalog of creator-made packs and worlds. Marketplace packs are applied to a Realm world the same way as your own, and players who join are offered the download even if they do not own the pack.

Community add-ons, uploaded inside a world

  1. 1On a Windows PC or a phone, download the add-on and open its .mcaddon or .mcpack file. Minecraft imports it and confirms with a pop-up.
  2. 2Create a world, or edit one of your own, and switch the add-on on in the Behavior Packs and Resource Packs tabs.
  3. 3If the add-on's page asks for an experimental toggle, turn it on in this local world. A Realm cannot switch experiments on, but a world uploaded with them keeps them.
  4. 4Upload the world to your Realm, replacing one of its world slots.
  5. 5Everyone then plays it on the Realm, consoles included.

That last step is the only way console players get community add-ons at all: minecraft.wiki notes consoles cannot import them and reach them only through a Realm, and Microsoft's add-on guide gives the same upload route.

Marketplace packs only work on Realms and your own worlds: minecraft.wiki notes they cannot be applied to worlds on external servers.

When your group wants real mods

Java Realms cannot run mods, but a modded server can: modded Minecraft server hosting runs Forge, Fabric or NeoForge and installs a CurseForge modpack with its loader before the first start.

Plan on a fresh world. Your Realm world is on 26.3, the three packs below run on Minecraft 1.21.1 or 1.19.2, and opening a newer world in an older version is a downgrade that Minecraft's own warning calls not supported.

Keep the Realm world anyway. Every Java Realm backup can be downloaded as a singleplayer world, and you can upload that world to a server on the same version later.

Memory depends on the pack. CraftLands sizes Cobblemon from a 4 GB floor, Life in the Village 3 from 6 GB and Better MC (BMC5) from 8 GB, each plus about 0.2 GB per player, and the RAM calculator works it out for your group.

Every player installs the same pack in the CurseForge app, and installing it on the server happens in the panel.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use CurseForge for Realms?

Only for mods that run on your own game. The CurseForge app installs mods and modpacks on your computer, and a Java Realm cannot load mod files, so a modpack of content mods cannot play on it. A CurseForge profile with only client-side mods, built for the Realm's version (26.3), can still join.

Can I use Litematica on a Realm?

Yes. Litematica runs on your own game only: Modrinth lists it as required on the client and unsupported on the server, and it had a Fabric build for 26.3 on 27 September 2026. Install it with MaLiLib, the library it requires, on the same version as the Realm.

Does Simple Voice Chat work on Realms?

Not on a Java Realm. Simple Voice Chat's own page says it needs special setup on the server, including opening a port for it, and mods cannot be installed on a Java Realm. It works on a Java server where you can add the mod and open that port.

Where to go next

If the group is heading to a modded server, our guide to the best Minecraft modpacks sorts packs by playstyle with the RAM each needs. For single mods, mods to play with friends marks which go on the server and which on each player's game.

Run This on a Modded Minecraft Server

Pick any pack on CurseForge or Modrinth and we install it with its loader and its Minecraft version before first boot, so nothing has to be matched up by hand. Forge, Fabric and NeoForge all run on the same Ryzen 9 9950X at €2.50 per GB.
