What Is a SevTech: Ages Server?

SevTech: Ages hides the game from you. On Minecraft 1.12.2, ores, items, recipes and even mob spawns stay invisible until the advancement tree unlocks the age that uses them. Age 0 is the Tutorial Age, the first half of the Stone Age, and it has no ores in it at all: you pull plant fibre out of grass, pick sticks and rocks off the ground, and build a Work Stump to earn your way forward.

Five gates follow. A Melter from Tinkers' Complement ends the Bronze Age. The Medieval Age ends at a Coal Engine, which means an Astral Sorcery altar for the Starmetal that opens the Twilight Forest portal, then the Naga, the Lich, the Hydra and the Ur-Ghast, plus a detour through the Betweenlands. Industrial reveals platinum and asks for a single piece of plastic. Modern brings cobalt, ardite, the End, Applied Energistics and a Galacticraft rocket to the Moon.

Being a 1.12.2 pack means Java 8 and one thread carrying most of the tick. First boot is the shock: the pack's own tracker has a report of startup taking over ten minutes on a server with 4 to 8 GB allocated, with about five of those minutes spent copying ItemStacks inside CraftTweaker. People mistake it for a hang and kill it. Let it finish. Later restarts are much quicker, and the ongoing cost is worldgen.

Ages are earned per player through advancements, not stored on the world, so a friend joining in month three lands at the Work Stump with no ores visible while you are fuelling a rocket. That is the one thing to say out loud before you invite anybody. Version 3.2.3 from December 2021 closed the pack out, so nothing will change under a two-hundred-hour save: set the server up once and leave it alone.

How much RAM does a SevTech: Ages server need?

Take 8 GB. It covers 10 players and is the plan we recommend. 6 GB is exactly what the pack asks for on its own, which leaves nothing once people are actually in the world. 12 GB covers 30 players and absorbs late-age machinery plus the extra dimensions without complaint.

Why is the first start so slow?

SevTech generates its own worldgen and builds a very large advancement tree on first boot. A report on the pack's GitHub measured that at over ten minutes with 4 to 8 GB allocated, roughly half of it inside CraftTweaker. It is not a crash, and later restarts are far quicker, so let the first one run.

If a friend joins later, do they start where we are?

No. Ages come from per-player advancements, so someone joining in month three opens the game at the Work Stump with no ores visible while you are landing on the Moon. Groups who want to play together should start together, or plan on walking newcomers back through the Tutorial Age.

Which Java version does SevTech: Ages need?

Java 8, because the pack runs Minecraft 1.12.2 on Forge 14.23.5. Newer runtimes will not launch it. We install the loader and the pack before first boot with the right Java already selected, so this only becomes your problem if you swap jars yourself.

Is SevTech: Ages still maintained?

Version 3.2.3 landed on 17 December 2021 and closed the pack out. There is no 1.16 or 1.20 port, so 1.12.2 is permanent. For a long playthrough that means nothing shifts under you, and if you want something newer later you can swap packs on the same server at the same price.

Which dimensions will our world end up generating?

More than you would expect. Progression pushes you into the Twilight Forest for the Naga, Lich, Hydra and Ur-Ghast, down into the Betweenlands, out to the End, and finally to the Moon by Galacticraft rocket. Each one writes its own region files, so the save grows steadily.
