About the Modpack

What Is a Pixelmon Server?

The Pixelmon Modpack is the official ready to play wrapper around the Pixelmon mod: Pokemon spawn in the world by biome, you catch them with Poke Balls, then battle, breed and evolve them. Build 9.3.16 runs Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge 21.1.200, and the manifest is short, 13 mods plus Chris Geddes' original soundtrack, with JourneyMap providing sprite integration on the map.

There is no tech tree here, the loop is spawn hunting, boss Pokemon and filling out a Pokedex. Recent builds keep widening it. Version 9.3.15 added Mega Darkrai along with Mega Raichu X and Y and their mega stones, and 9.3.16 put Mega Starmie and Mega Dragonite into the spawning pool. On a server it turns social fast, with trading, battles and a race for the rarest spawns.

A short mod list still carries a heavy load. Every wild Pokemon is a living entity with models, animation and AI, and the pack pairs that with Terralith, Incendium, Tectonic and the Structory sets, so worldgen is expensive while players roam hunting biome specific spawns. Pixelmon's own performance guide is blunt about the fix: pre-generate every world players touch, not just the overworld, before you open the doors.

Pixelmon suits mixed age groups and public servers better than most modpacks, because nobody has to learn a machine. Set a world border first. The official guide recommends 15,000 to 20,000 blocks across for a starting public server and warns that maps beyond 30,000 can pass 50 GB of disk after ten months. Then tune wild spawning and drop view distance to 6 if you need headroom.

6 GB is the floor Pixelmon's own guide gives before anybody joins, so a solo test world is already at the limit. Wild Pokemon entities are memory hungry and autosaves start to pause the server.

Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? Find answers to the most common queries about plans, setup, and managing your game server to help you launch quickly and enjoy smooth multiplayer gameplay.

How much RAM does a Pixelmon server need?

Pixelmon's own guide puts the bare minimum at 6 GB and calls 8 GB enough for a small player base, which lines up with 8 GB covering 10 players here. A public server aiming at 50 players wants 16 GB, which the same guide treats as the sensible ceiling.

Which Minecraft version and loader does the Pixelmon Modpack run on?

The current 9.3 line, up to 9.3.16, runs Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge and therefore Java 21. The 9.2 builds are Forge on 1.20.2, and 9.1 is Forge on 1.16.5, so pick deliberately if your players are pinned to an older version.

Our server lags when a lot of Pokemon spawn. What do we change?

Wild spawning lives in config/pixelmon/wild.yml. The values that matter are entities-per-player, which defaults to 30, spawns-per-pass at 2, spawn-frequency at 60 passes per minute, and minimum-distance-between-spawns at 15. Edit them while the world is offline, since changes only apply on reload.

Can we carry an old 1.16.5 or 1.20.2 world into the 1.21.1 pack?

No. The 9.3 line is a different Minecraft version and a different mod loader from the 9.1 and 9.2 builds, so an old save will not load on it. Plan a fresh map for 9.3, pre-generate it, and keep the old world archived as a backup you can still spin up separately.

Can I add sidemods on top of the Pixelmon pack?

Yes, and the short mod list leaves plenty of room. Shop mods, land claim mods and map tools all sit alongside Pixelmon happily, but every addition has to be a 1.21.1 NeoForge build to match the 9.3 pack, or the server will not get past loading.

Can Bedrock or mobile players join our Pixelmon server?

No. Pixelmon is a Java Edition mod, so every player needs Java Minecraft with the matching pack version installed. There is no Bedrock build of the mod, and console or mobile clients cannot connect to a Pixelmon world at all.

Start Your Pixelmon Server Today

Modded Minecraft ticks its world on a single thread, so clock speed does more for your Pixelmon server than extra cores ever will. Every plan runs an AMD Ryzen 9 9950X boosting to 5.7 GHz with DDR5 behind it, on a 10 Gbps line with DDoS filtering that stays on.
