What Is a Pixelmon Server?
The Pixelmon Modpack is the official ready to play wrapper around the Pixelmon mod: Pokemon spawn in the world by biome, you catch them with Poke Balls, then battle, breed and evolve them. Build 9.3.16 runs Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge 21.1.200, and the manifest is short, 13 mods plus Chris Geddes' original soundtrack, with JourneyMap providing sprite integration on the map.
There is no tech tree here, the loop is spawn hunting, boss Pokemon and filling out a Pokedex. Recent builds keep widening it. Version 9.3.15 added Mega Darkrai along with Mega Raichu X and Y and their mega stones, and 9.3.16 put Mega Starmie and Mega Dragonite into the spawning pool. On a server it turns social fast, with trading, battles and a race for the rarest spawns.
A short mod list still carries a heavy load. Every wild Pokemon is a living entity with models, animation and AI, and the pack pairs that with Terralith, Incendium, Tectonic and the Structory sets, so worldgen is expensive while players roam hunting biome specific spawns. Pixelmon's own performance guide is blunt about the fix: pre-generate every world players touch, not just the overworld, before you open the doors.
Pixelmon suits mixed age groups and public servers better than most modpacks, because nobody has to learn a machine. Set a world border first. The official guide recommends 15,000 to 20,000 blocks across for a starting public server and warns that maps beyond 30,000 can pass 50 GB of disk after ten months. Then tune wild spawning and drop view distance to 6 if you need headroom.
How Much RAM Does a Pixelmon Server Need?
6 GB before anyone joins, then roughly 0.2 GB per player online.
6 GB is the floor Pixelmon's own guide gives before anybody joins, so a solo test world is already at the limit. Wild Pokemon entities are memory hungry and autosaves start to pause the server.
Covers 10 players and matches the guide's advice for a small player base, on default wild.yml spawn settings with a pre-generated map and a sensible world border.
Covers 50 players, the range public Pixelmon servers actually run at, and the ceiling the official guide suggests. Raise entities-per-player only after watching TPS hold at that size.
Sized from Pixelmon's 6 GB floor plus 0.2 GB per concurrent player. You can move between these tiers from the panel at any time, prorated to the day.
