About the Modpack

What Is a GT New Horizons Server?

GT New Horizons is a progression pack for Minecraft 1.7.10 built around GregTech. Release 2.8.4 runs on Forge 10.13.4.1614 and lists more than 230 mods, and its team has refined the balance for over ten years: thousands of recipe changes, mods written for the pack, and a questbook of more than 3,000 quests.

Every mod sits on GregTech's tier ladder. You start in the stone age barely surviving, work up to steam machines, then electricity and the voltage tiers above it. Later tiers send you to other planets and dimensions for resources and have you fight bosses for their magic, so the pack plays like one long game rather than a pile of mods.

Server cost grows with the tier, not only the headcount. The GTNH wiki puts a server at 6 GB plus 0.5 GB per extra player in the early game, and 6 GB plus 1 GB per extra player from UV onward, when multiblocks and automation run around the clock. It also stresses single-thread speed, which is what a Ryzen 9 9950X boosting to 5.7 GHz is for.

This is a pack measured in months, so treat the server as a long-lived world. Start on a plan sized for the early game and move up as the base grows; resizes are prorated to the day, and the questbook carries the tutorial load for anyone new to GregTech.

The GTNH wiki's baseline for a server with one player on it, so the second join already pushes past it. Fine for testing, not for a group.

Covers 4 players in the early game, enough for a small group from the stone age through the first voltage tiers.

FAQ Quick Help

Frequently Asked Questions

Loaders, pack sources, memory and cost, answered for modded Minecraft specifically.

How much RAM does a GTNH server need?

Take 8 GB for up to 4 players early on, or 12 GB for up to 12. The GTNH wiki puts a server at 6 GB plus 0.5 GB per extra player in the early game and plus 1 GB per extra player from UV onward, so a group deep into the late game should size up.

Which Minecraft version and loader does it run on?

Minecraft 1.7.10 on Forge 10.13.4.1614, with release 2.8.4 as the current CurseForge build. Anything you add on top has to be a 1.7.10 Forge mod, and players need the same pack version as the server to join.

Will an update wipe our world?

New releases appear in the panel as one-click updates on the same server, keeping your world folder. Read the release notes for the version you move to and take a backup before every update, since a pack this large can change recipes and worlds between versions.

Why is the start so slow compared to other tech packs?

The pack starts you in the stone age and gates everything behind GregTech's tiers, so the first steam machine is a milestone and electricity is a project. The questbook walks you through each step, which is why groups new to GregTech can still start here.

Why does the server lag later in the game?

Late-game GTNH runs large multiblocks and automation that keep ticking whether anyone is nearby, which is why the wiki's RAM guidance doubles per player from UV onward. Check what is loaded and ticking before buying a bigger plan.

Can I add mods or move to a different pack later?

Yes to both. You get full file access plus one-click installs from CurseForge and Modrinth, and you can swap the server to another modpack from the panel on the same plan. We back up your world before the switch.
